In the 80s and 90s Attention Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis skyrocketed, and with them so did prescriptions to Adderall, Ritalin, and other psychostimulants. These drugs are being used to help those with ADHD focus their thoughts and ignore distractions. But many children experience side-effects from these drugs, like stomachaches and insomnia. While it might seem obvious to some, several new studies found that exercise greatly improves cognitive performance and brain functioning in children. Meaning that instead of giving kids prescription drugs so they can concentrate, you’re probably better off having them go outside and play—a relief for parents and kids.
