It is estimated that one billion migrating birds crash into buildings in the U.S. every year due to disorientation caused by electric lights. Since New York State is a heavy bird migration route, the state authorities have decided to turn off bright outdoor lights at all public buildings between 11:00pm and dawn during peak migration season. New York State joins the Rockefeller Centre, Chrysler Building and Time Warner Centre into heeding the call by the National Audubon Society to save birds by turning off the lights. Let’s hope that this gesture toward wildlife proves to be as effective as it is gracious.
