Birds have come to avoid cities. They crash into skyscrapers or get lost because of the bright lights at night. But there’s something we can do to make them feel more at ease: put up bird houses to sign posts.
Nest Project, based in London, aims to help out the birds while making urbanites aware of “where nature could be in the urban environment.” What’s different from old-fashioned bird house? This design requires a little playful volunteer work: The perch at the bottom of the nest doubles as a pencil sharpener. Why? So that anyone who buys a birdhouse will spend a week working in pencil and collect pencil shavings to pad the bottom of the nest.
