Far beneath the bustling streets of London, an old bomb shelter that’s been transformed into a hi-tech underground farm is revolutionizing urban agriculture. The farm, created by a company called Zero Carbon Food, delivers Londoners freshly grown salads and herbs through a growing system that manipulates the environment for optimal growth. The greens are grown on stacked hydroponic (water-based, no-soil) beds using energy-efficient LEDs and no pesticides while needing only 30 percent of the water needed to grow plants in open fields. With urbanization drawing more and more people into cities, growing produce in urban areas like this can provide a solution to our needs while alleviating the heavy demands placed upon the outdoor farms and the rural environment.
