While still not all votes have been count, it’s become apparant that Aung San Suu Kyi’s party has not only won Myanmar’s landmark election with a staggering majority in parliament, but that it is also allowed to take over power. The president’s spokesman has now said his government would obey the election results, work to transfer power peacefully, and congratulated Suu Kyi. Yesterday’s state-run newspaper read: “Welcoming the New Guard”. This historic event will end 50 years of military dictatorship. While Suu Kyi, a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, is banned from the presidency under an army-drafted constitution, her National League for Democracy party will now be able to push through legislation, form a government and handpick a president.
