Cows have a rather impressive digestion system. They spend about 8 hours a day eating, and their four stomachs can break down food that many other mammals can’t. A problem is that they are rather gassy. Emissions from a burping grown dairy cow can amount to about 260 to 650 grams of methane per day, and methane is a greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. It would be a good idea if we would all start eating less meat, because that would mean we don’t need so many cows anymore. But scientists are also looking at ways to make cow burps less noxious. Their solutions are creative, ranging from adding natural and laboratory-made substances to cow feed, developing an anti-methane vaccine and breeding a cleaner cow. The perfect solution that doesn’t harm the health of the cow hasn’t been found yet, but it’s only a matter of time.
