Teen children of parents with depression often suffer from mental health problems. But some teens remain remarkably resilient, and researchers are now trying to find out how they do that. It seems there are some factors they all have in common: warmth from the parent with mental health problems, support from the other parent, good relationships with peers, a sense of self-efficacy and engaging in intense exercise or sports more than once a week. Psychologists and social workers might be able to work with the study results, to focus on children and teens in the family when there is a parent with mental health problems.
