The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that 1.26 million electric cars hit the world’s roads in 2015. This chart shows how rapidly electric cars are entering societies. However, there’s still a long way to go. Worldwide there are more than 1 billion gas- and diesel-powered cars on the road and the IEA calculates that we need to see about 150 million electric cars on the road by 2030 and 1 billion by 2050 to avoid more than 2°C of global warming.
