A nice cool breeze in the summer would feel even better if the trees surrounding your yard were also generating electricity for your home. We’re used to the idea of capturing sunlight for energy, but now it’s also possible to capture wind energy through “wind trees.” Developed by a French company called New Wind, these “trees” have plastic “leaves” that spin soundlessly to harness energy, and unlike larger industrial turbines, these leaves capture energy from wind speeds of less than five mph. These unusual wind turbines aren’t ready for household adaptation quite yet, but they could be used in places where there is no place to install solar panels like plazas or apartment rooftops.
