Irrigation is terrible for the planet, requiring great quantities of water while increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Drip irrigation, a farming practice that provides a plant with whatever it needs at just the right time, provides an excellent solution. Through plastic ‘drip lines’ that lie either above the soil or sub-surface, farmers provide small quantities of water controlled straight from the source to irrigate the soil. The system uses 60 to 70 percent less water and allows farmers to reduce emissions through the more precise use of fertilizers, which are pre-mixed in the water before irrigation. Best of all, it increases crop yields significantly.
