Today’s Solutions: April 05, 2025

Since World War II almost 4 generations of world leaders have built the increasingly peaceful and democratic world order that has now come under threat from populist leaders on both sides of the Atlantic. How do we respond? Politics as usual, doesn’t provide an effective answer. This is not about left or right. In this long and thoughtful essay Paul Collier, economics professor at Oxford University, argues for pragmatism. We don’t need a new ideology. We need solutions to problems. That’s a language we understand at The Optimist Daily. One possible solution: Taxation could be focused less on how much money has been made, and more on how it has been made. Entrepreneurism and innovation should be stimulated above collecting rents. Take your time. This is a very good read that gives a sense of a new direction in turbulent times.
