We tend to think of food and medicine as different entities, but in California, a food-as-medicine movement is picking up steam amongst doctors and parents. The idea is that by treating food as a means to prevent diabetes and cancers caused by poor diets, you can limit the reliance people have on modern medicine. The food-as-medicine movement is taking shape in different forms such as the “Shop with Your Doc” program, which sends doctors to local grocery stores to help guide customers towards healthy, inexpensive alternatives to processed foods. Another way doctors are helping people is by prescribing nutritional changes that can help prevent, limit or even reverse diseases by changing what patients eat. Although the power food isn’t always enough to prevent illnesses, dietary changes can play a major role in maintaining good overall health.
