The most Republican-dominated, oil-rich and fracking-friendly of the U.S. has found itself with the improbable status of being a national leader of wind energy. That’s right, Texas has by far the greatest wind generating capacity in the entire U.S., producing enough electricity to power 5.7 million homes. Especially for ranchers in desperate need of financial security, wind energy has been a blessing as it allows them to lease their land to major companies that plant wind turbines in exchange for regular income. Surprisingly enough, the top three producers by percentage of electricity supply generated by wind are Iowa, South Dakota and Kansas, which is a bit ironic considering all three states including Texas voted for Donald Trump, who has made clear his dislike of clean energy.
