All too often do we see fashion advertisements that use dangerously-thin models to show off new products. Not only can this lead to poor self-esteem among young people exposed to these images, but it also sets an unrealistic, unhealthy standard for how a body show look. To put a stop to these unrealistic images, France has banned the use of unhealthily thin fashion models. When applying to jobs, models will need to provide a doctor’s certificate attesting to their overall physical health, with special regard to their body mass index—a measure of weight in relation to height. The use of digitally altered photos will also have to be explicitly stated on the advertisement under the new law.
