A new startup is drastically reducing the cost of installing geothermal systems to provide residential buildings with heating and cooling from the ground. Once installed the systems provide free heating and cooling. But the investment at $80,000 and upwards has been an obstacle for widespread acceptance by homeowners. But would it be different with a $20,000 price tag? That’s the hope of a New York startup supported by Alphabet, Google’s parent company. It has developed a whole new process for installing, packaging, and financing home geothermal systems, thus cutting the typical cost by up to three-quarters.
