Although women and men are far from equal in Saudi Arabia, great progress was made after a new royal decree granted women the right to drive cars. The decision comes just a week after a broad reform program was implemented that now allows women to enter sports stadiums for the first time. The royal decree marks a great change in the tone of the monarchy, but it wouldn’t have happened without decades of sustained Saudi female defiance.
