As a consumer, it can be frustrating that the everyday products you need are packaged in materials that wind up in the trash. We can avoid creating waste from packaging by being selective with our purchases, but it’s not always possible. What we really need are alternative ways to package goods that don’t hurt the environment. Giant electronics company Samsung has taken such an initiative by promising to minimize and replace its packaging with environment-friendly materials by the second half of 2019. Appliances like TVs, fridges, washing machines and other kitchen products will no longer come in standard plastic bags but in packages made from biomass materials like vegetable fats, corn starch, or sugar cane.
