While many of us may want to reduce our consumption of single use plastics, it can be difficult to do so due to the lack of reusable packaging options at conventional grocery stores. The New Jersey based company, TerraCycle, is looking to change this. The company, started by young entrepreneur Tom Szaky, is partnering with companies such as Clorox, Nestlé, Mars, Coca-Cola, and PepsiCo to bring everyday companies into the world of reusable packaging.

Through TerraCycle’s program, a multitude of items from orange juice to deodorant can be ordered online in reusable and durable packaging and returned for reuse when finished. After re-collected via UPS, the containers are washed, sterilized, refilled, and ready for another customer.

The program is already collaborating with big store chains such as Carrefour in France and launched in Paris May 14th and New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey May 21st. The program benefits customers, as well as the environment, by offering reusable containers which are much higher quality than disposable ones. For example, the reusable Häagen-Dazs container features a vacuum sealed wall to keep ice cream frozen for hours longer than coated cardboard could.
