Amazon is (finally) doing something to reduce the massive amount of packaging waste that comes from orders off their online store. Starting on September 3, third-party sellers who use excessive packaging for large items will receive a fine from Amazon. Meanwhile, Amazon has been working closely with its vendors to design, test, and certify new sustainable packaging that reduces waste and carbon while also “ensuring customer’s products arrive undamaged.” Third-party sellers who violate the rules can be fined $1.99 per order. While this is a commendable step forward for the retailing giant, Amazon needs to go the extra mile and ensure products are sent through low-emission transportation options if they ever want to call themselves eco-friendly.
