Back in the 1960s, one of the most fascinating Galapagos turtle species was on the verge of extinction. With only 2 males and 12 females left on the island, a breeding program was initiated to save the dying species in the San Diego zoo. The good news for the scientist involved in the project was that Diego – nicknamed “the playboy tortoise” – was part of the 2 male survivors in the rescue team.
Thanks to Diego’s abnormally high libido, scientists have reported an absolute success in the program. After 60 years, the total population went from 14 tortoises to over 2,000. This success wouldn’t have been possible without sex-loving Diego. The Galapagos National Park service believe that Diego is the patriarch of around 40% of the current population.
Let’s just hope Diego’s high-performance genes are passed down to further generations and ensures the population will keep steadily growing.
