You likely clean your toilet and sink frequently, but when was the last time you cleaned the grime out of your shower curtain? This often overlooked part of your bathroom can collect a lot of dirt and even mold, so here’s how to properly clean your shower curtain.

The first step is to clean the plastic liner. You can wash the plastic liner in a washing machine with cold water and hang it to dry or scrub it by hand with baking soda and a microfiber cloth.

Next, it’s time to clean the actual curtain. If you have a cloth curtain, you can also machine wash it on cold. Add a couple of extra towels to the load to prevent the curtain from clumping. If your curtain has stains, you can add baking soda to the wash with detergent and add a cup of white vinegar before the rinse cycle. Adding vinegar also helps neutralize mold and mildew smells. Most curtains can be run through the drier on a no heat setting, but check the care tag to be sure!

Lastly, for a thorough clean, it’s important to get germs and mold off the shower rod and rings. Remove the rings and soak them in diluted white or apple cider vinegar. You can scrub stubborn spots with a brush or rag. For the rod, combine ¼ cup baking soda, 1 to 2 tablespoons castile soap, and a splash of apple cider vinegar. This solution can be used to clean the rod and tub.

Now that your shower is squeaky clean, keep it that way by ventilating your bathroom well with windows and a fan and closing the curtain after each shower so it can dry well between uses.
