In a groundbreaking development, Thai researchers pioneered an invisible and edible coating infused with cannabidiol (CBD), presenting a viable answer to the troublesome problem of rotting fruit. This novel method has the potential to dramatically increase the shelf life of fruits, thereby minimizing food waste and helping both consumers and the environment.
A novel approach to food spoilage
Thammasat University and Chulabhorn Research Institute experts were inspired by the rising applications of CBD in numerous industries to investigate its potential for fruit preservation. CBD, a non-psychoactive component found in cannabis, has gained popularity for its therapeutic effects in the treatment of anxiety, epilepsy, pain, and other health problems. Recent investigations have also demonstrated its antibacterial characteristics, which has piqued the researchers’ attention even more.
Using CBD to preserve the environment
The researchers mixed CBD with biodegradable polymers often utilized in drug delivery systems in their hunt for a viable solution. They created a new coating that could be effortlessly applied to fruits by generating nanoparticles measuring only 400 nanometers broad. When exposed to ascorbic acid and calcium chloride, this coating, when mixed with water and sodium alginate, creates a gel-like substance, resulting in a protective covering surrounding the fruit.
To test the coating’s efficiency, the researchers placed treated and untreated strawberries in open containers and refrigerated them for an extended amount of time. The results were astounding: CBD-treated strawberries had much less deterioration and preserved their brilliant color for 15 days longer than untreated strawberries. Furthermore, higher CBD concentrations displayed even better preservation performance, demonstrating the adaptability of this ground-breaking technique.
Beyond fruits: The future of freshness
With additional study and development, this innovative CBD-infused coating has the potential to revolutionize the preservation of perishable foods, resulting in significant food waste reduction. This technique could be applied to other varieties of fruit and other perishable foods in addition to strawberries.
