On Sunday, the United States women’s relay swim team won a historic 4×100 meter medley relay, claiming Olympic gold and shattering the world record. Their amazing achievement, with a time of 3:49.63, beat the previous world record held by another American team in 2019 by about a second.

A dominant lead from the beginning

The United States team, made up of Regan Smith, Lilly King, Gretchen Walsh, and Torri Huske, seized possession of the race from the start. Their unrelenting pace and synchronized perfection left little doubt as to their victory. The Americans finished almost three seconds ahead of the Australian team, which grabbed silver, while the Chinese team won bronze.

Torri Huske, in particular, gave a standout performance, contributing to the victory and adding to her outstanding tally of three gold and two silver medals at these Games.

A run of strong performances

The victory in the medley relay wrapped up a weekend of outstanding achievements by the American swim team at La Defense Arena in the Paris suburbs. This winning streak came after a poor start to the Games, demonstrating the resilience and competence of the US swimmers.

Earlier on Sunday, Bobby Finke established a world record in winning Olympic gold in the 1,500-meter freestyle final, cementing the United States’ swimming dominance.

Leading the medal count

US swimmers won an amazing number of medals: eight gold, 13 silver, and seven bronze. This result elevated the American competitors to the top national swim team at the Paris Games, surpassing their Australian counterparts, who won seven gold, eight silver, and three bronze medals.

The men’s relay squad faced stiffer opposition despite the U.S. women’s success. In a stunning turn of events, the United States men’s 4×100 meter medley relay team, which had previously dominated this event, finished second. The Chinese team won gold in a close race, while the French team, led by great swimmer Léon Marchand, claimed bronze. The United States team, comprised of Ryan Murphy, Nic Fink, Caeleb Dressel, and Hunter Armstrong, performed admirably but came short of reclaiming first place.

Looking ahead

Sunday’s competitions marked the end of the Olympic pool swimming events in Paris. However, the action continues with the men’s and women’s outdoor 10,000-meter marathon swimming competitions, which will take place in the Seine River later this week.
