Scientists have discovered a new compound that causes cancer cells to commit suicide while leaving healthy cells unscathed. This promising new treatment uses the compound to trigger a natural process in the body called apoptosis that gets rid of malfunctioning and unwanted cells. While certain existing chemotherapy drugs induce apoptosis indirectly by damaging the DNA in cancer cells, this treatment directly triggers the process by intentionally activating this new compound, which scientists call the “executioner protein.”
