For the past decade, teens have navigated the most tumultuous period of their lives with a smartphone in their hand. We know the power of connectivity can be liberating, especially in adolescence. We also know how our craving for that connection often leaves us longing for more—incomplete without one more scroll or an extra like. Although little research exists on the effects of smartphones on the brains of teenagers, we do know there’s a negative link between screen time and mental health. That’s why this author believes we must teach kids mindfulness—the ability to be alone with your own thoughts—before they get a smartphone.
