Just 9 percent of the world is living on less than $1.90 a day, but we’re still far away from reducing that number to zero. While India and China have quickly reduced poverty over the last few decades, sub-Saharan Africa’s rate of poverty is decreasing at a slower rate. This is a worrying prospect considering the population of this region is expected to double in size by 2040, meaning that nearly 90 percent of the world’s poorest people will be living in sub-Saharan Africa. If we want to eliminate extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa and other poor regions of the world, this is what we must do.
