Lawmakers in Hawaii have been busy bees over the past couple years when it comes to drafting laws that protect the natural beauty of their islands. The Aloha State banned all sunscreens that harm coral reefs last year and banned all plastic bags years ago, with new legislation being proposed that will outright ban all single-use plastics common in the food and beverage industry. Now lawmakers in Honolulu are moving forward with a new law to protect sharks and rays. These marine animals have sadly enough become the target of “big game” shark-fishing excursions, causing their numbers to dwindle rapidly. As a result, lawmakers have set forth a new law that will ban the killing of any shark or ray in state waters, no matter what species it is. While the idea of more sharks in Hawaii’s waters might make you more scared to swim, the reality is these sea creatures are critical for the island’s marine ecosystems.
