The Pacific island nation of Vanuatu currently boasts some of the strictest laws when it comes to plastic waste. In July, the island voted to ban single-use plastic bags, drinking straws and styrofoam containers in a dramatic attempt to stem the flow of trash from the country’s coasts into the ocean. Fines for businesses and shoppers alike who use these single-use plastics are hefty, costing anywhere between $175 and $900 per offense. Then, just a week ago, Vanuatu decided to beef up their current ban by including a slew of additional single-use plastics. Disposable diapers, plastic cutlery, and grocery packaging are just a few of the items that are set to be banned from the island within the coming year.
