Compared to other states in the US, for some time, the state of Hawaii has long been spearheading the fight against the global environmental crisis. The Aloha State has already mandated 100 percent renewable energy use and approved an upcoming prohibition on sunscreen ingredients that harm coral.
More recently though, Hawaii’s lawmakers have proposed an ambitious bill that would prohibit most fast-food and full-service restaurants from distributing and using plastic drink bottles, utensils, stirring sticks, bags, and straws. If the bill is passed, the island-state would become the first state to take such a drastic measure against plastic pollution.
