As an anti-corruption lawyer and climate activist, Zuzana Caputova already had an impressive record in Slovakia. But now she has reached the peak of Slovakian politics after becoming the first woman to be elected president in the nation’s history. For the past year, Caputova has been the most prominent voice in the battle against high levels of corruption within the country, running her campaign on the slogan “stand up to evil”. She champions gay rights and opposes a ban on abortion in the Conservative Roman Catholic country. Considering that Slovakia’s neighbors Poland and Hungary have seen a major resurgence in populist, anti-immigration politics, Caputova’s win is all the more impressive.
