Just a week after the UK made the historic decision to declare a climate emergency, the parliament of Ireland has followed up with their own declaration, making it the second country to do so. Should you be wondering why declaring a climate emergency is of the utmost importance, allow us to fill you in.

Beyond acknowledging climate change has a legitimate, urgent issue, declaring a climate emergency means addressing the problem goes on top of the priority list when it comes to policymaking. It also raises public awareness about the issue and pushes the government to starts drafting even more ambitious laws when it comes to reducing emissions. After making the declaration last week, the British government is eyeing a 2050 target date to reach net zero emissions, which it says can be achieved without causing substantial economic damage and at a relatively low cost.
