In a move that’s expected to shake things up in the meatless meat industry, Impossible Foods’ plant-based burgers will soon no longer be so impossible to get your hands on. US regulators have finally approved a key ingredient in the company’s patties, clearing the way for them to go on sale directly to consumers.
The FDA has formally ruled that soy leghemoglobin — the additive in Impossible Burgers that gives it a meat-like flavor and makes it “bleed” — is safe for consumers to eat. The FDA’s new rules will go into effect September 4, barring last-minute objections.
