Google is falling behind when it comes to Apple and Samsung when it comes to its sustainability pledges. Apple, for example, has at least 50% recycled plastic in some of their gadgets and at least 11 products with recycled aluminum. Samsung also recently pledged to increase its use of sustainable packaging.
In an attempt to keep up with its competitors and the demands of customers, Google has announced a loose plan to reach carbon neutral shipping and incorporate more recycled plastics into their Made by Google products. Google did not give a specific timeline for carbon-neutral delivery but plans to increase its use of cargo ships instead of air vessels.
This is easier said than done, however, since cargo ships taker longer than planes. To work around this issue, Google will need to find ways to streamline their development and production processes so they do not lose customers due to longer wait times. Beyond their pledge to carbon-neutral shipping, the company has also committed to including recycled plastic in 100 percent of its devices by 2022.
