After reigning in the auto industry as the powertrain of choice for a century, the internal combustion engine is finally dying.
The beginning of the end is marked by the recent decision of German automotive company, Daimler, to stop developing internal combustion engines as part of its efforts to embrace electric vehicles (EVs).
It’s a massive statement from the company that is credited for having invented the prototype of the modern gasoline engine and for producing its line of Mercedes-Benz luxury cars.
The car company’s development executive Markus Schaefer said that there are no plans to develop a next-generation combustion engine as the company focuses on new electric powertrains. However, Schaefer reportedly noted that they still might work on some specific parts to improve on their existing engines.
As the electric vehicle revolution is slowly making its way into the upper echelon of the industry, it seems that the electrified transition may come sooner than expected.
