If removing tons of carbon from the atmosphere to mitigate climate change seems like a difficult task, doing so profitably sounds almost impossible. However, these carbon tech companies are demonstrating that removing carbon and turning it into revenue is feasible.

The interface is an innovative flooring company that uses plant-based backing for carpet tiles that store more carbon than they emit in their lifetime. The company also uses rigorous recycling practices to turn waste from old tiles into new products.

Bay Area startup Kiverdi is tackling carbon in aquaculture, the largest growing food production sector. The company uses microbes combined with carbon dioxide, hydrogen, nitrogen, and water in a bioreactor powered by renewable energy to produce fishmeal and other products traditionally obtained from wild or farmed fish.

Meanwhile, LanzaTech takes carbon-rich gas emitted from factories and uses it to produce fuel, including jet fuel which was used to power a Boeing 747 flight from Orlando to London last year.

As carbon emissions and their effects on global climate have become a hot topic in business, politics, and media, don’t be surprised if you see more and more companies taking advantage of carbon for environmental and business benefits.
