Winemakers in California have given unexpected new life to old oil field drill stem pipes, using them to create an equipment barn covered in solar panels. The use of the rusty oil pipes gives the barn a bit of steampunk vibe, fitting in nicely amongst the rolling vineyard-lined hills. But beyond its cool design, the barn also offsets over 100 percent of the energy needs for the sustainably-minded winery.
Plus it champions other eco-friendly design principles including rainwater collection and responsible stormwater practices. It’s safe to say we at The Optimist Daily are fans of this clever reuse of old oil drilling materials.
