COVID-19 is forcing many animal shelters and sanctuaries to close their doors, and one upside to being stuck at home is you have more time to help out a furry friend in need! Here are five ways you can help animals during the pandemic.

Fostering a pet is a great way to give a home to an animal in need and also reap the rewards of having a companion. Pets help lower stress levels, provide comfort, and ease loneliness. It’s no wonder why people are fostering and adopting pets more than ever during the pandemic!

Fostering is a great way to offer short-term relief for shelters and animals, but if you’ve always wanted to commit and adopt an animal, now is the time! Extra time at home will give you the perfect adjustment period to get to know your new pet and the time to train them too. Many shelters are offering discounts or waiving adoption fees right now to reduce the burden on facilities and employees.

If housing a pet isn’t for you, consider donating to an animal sanctuary. Many of these facilities rely on volunteer support which is in short supply right now. Consider donating money to a reputable sanctuary or donating your time in the form of social media awareness, graphic design, or copywriting needs.

If you are healthy enough to go shopping, consider buying some supplies to donate to a local shelter on your next essential grocery run. Blankets, toys, food, and cat litter are all in high demand. Many food banks and even Meals on Wheels will accept animal supply donations in addition to human food to provide for pet owners in need.

Lastly, using your voice to advocate for animals in the form of a petition is an easy and free way to support animals! Consider signing pledges to stop illegal wildlife trade and support congressional conservation bills. You can even contact your local government officials via email or phone to advocate for these causes. Research active bills and petitions to find one in line with your values.
