It’s mid-afternoon and you’re feeling sluggish. Instead of reaching for another cup of black coffee, maybe it’s time you consider new ways to add energy to your life. Keeping that in mind, here are 6 natural ways to boost your energy.

Shift your diet to cover common nutrient deficiencies: A balanced diet with a variety of vitamins, herbs, and supplements will help give the natural energy you need. Generally, the following nutrients are the ones to look out for when it comes to energy: Magnesium, iron, potassium, vitamin B12, and folic acid.

Don’t overwork yourself: When you have professional, family, and social obligations, it can leave you exhausted. One way to fix this is by creating a list of “must-do” activities based on your priorities. Work your way down the list and don’t be afraid to ask others for help. And don’t be afraid to give yourself time to rest.

Take a walk: Walking is a great way to stay healthy (while being socially distant). But it’s not just the physical benefits. Studies conducted by Robert Thayer, Ph.D., at California State University, show that a quick 10-minute walk increases energy levels significantly. The more people walked each day, the more energetic they felt, and the more their mood improved.

Don’t skip meals: Your brain needs a steady supply of nutrients to function correctly. While you shouldn’t snack all day, it’s good to give your brain and body small amounts of food every few hours to help it run optimally.

Drink more water: According to nutritionist Keith Ayoob, even slight dehydration can cause sleepiness or lethargy. The solution is simple: drink more water.

Be smart about caffeine: The caffeine in coffee can get your mind feeling sharp, but too much caffeine can be detrimental. In fact, too much caffeine can cause insomnia, especially when consumed in large amounts or after 2 PM, leaving you groggy the next day.
