A simple dance routine to a song from South Africa, which has gone viral over the last couple of months, is lifting global spirits during the pandemic as emotional clips featuring people dancing to the track have taken over the internet.

The South African 2019 hit Jerusalema by Master KG and Nomcebo Zikode has become the soundtrack for a viral dance challenge endorsed by presidents and priests across southern Africa and has provided an uplifting anthem for millions of people in the region.

The upbeat song topped the South African charts in December but it started percolating social media in February, when a group of friends in Angola shot an uplifting video of themselves dancing to the song over lunch, with plates of food in their hands.

The video was soon followed by another one from Portugal, which set the tone for how international the #JerusalemaDanceChallenge would prove to be. Clips of dancers across the globe now include nuns, construction workers, police officers, waiters, and fuel attendants.

And as many countries are now facing a second wave, emotional videos of healthcare workers in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Italy, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the US, Australia, and Puerto Rico have become a cheerful source of hope for patients fighting COVID-19.

South African police officers have joined in while army personnel in Ghana also demonstrated impressive dance skills in their camouflage. Newlyweds as well as priests and nuns didn’t fall behind the trend and were quick to get in on the act.
