Finding smarter ways to produce our food is an essential step in adapting to an increasingly volatile global agricultural system. Equipping local farmers with better, more innovative tools is one way to do this. With that in mind, Mexico City-based design studio NOS has created a new way for germinating and growing crops directly on the field.
Called AGRODOME, the product is a transparent, breathable, stackable, and portable system that allows farmers to plant and germinate their future crops directly in the ground, without the need for transporting the sprouts from a greenhouse to the field.
Made of 100 percent recycled PET bottles, the micro-environments take the form of a dome, the height of which can be adjusted depending on the growing stage of the plant. The central part works as a funnel that pierces the ground and allows for better distribution and absorption of water.
The domes feature a modular design, meaning that they can be mass-produced at an affordable price. This modularity also allows for them to be easily stacked for better storage and transportation, and it also makes it easy for the domes to be moved and rotated around the field depending on the farming and harvest cycle.
