Today’s Solutions: December 23, 2024

Heading into a new year can prompt some ambitious resolutions, but after a year like 2020, many of us may not be aiming to run a marathon or learn a new language. Instead, we might be simply seeking ways to bring more joy into our day to day lives. As we continue to spend more time at home, here are eight simple design tips to bring more joy into your home and cultivate happiness.

  1. Play music. Music is a powerful tool for influencing our mood. The right song can make you feel happy, sad, contemplative, or even excited. Play music that feeds your soul and lifts up the whole mood of your home.
  2. Channel some hygge. This classic Danish art of creating winter coziness is a cultural phenomenon for a reason. Sometimes leaning into the cold weather is the best strategy. Light your favorite candle, pull out a cozy blanket and embrace the security of the winter months.
  3. Get some citrus. Not only is citrus a great source of vitamin C, but it also has a symbolic history of brightening up spaces in feng shui. Place bowls of citrus in your kitchen or string up dried citrus slices for delicately beautiful home decor.
  4. Get colorful. Adding a pop of color to your home is a great way to bring it to life and add energy to your space. If you aren’t ready to commit to an accent wall, try a piece of statement furniture, bright art, or a new set of colorful sheets.
  5. Use essential oils. Just like sounds, smells can influence our mood and certain scents, like lavender, are known to boost mood and relaxation. Pick a smell that brings back fond memories to elevate your mood.
  6. Get crafty. Arts and crafts are not only a great way to pass the time, but they can also bring you purpose and joy. Create designated craft spaces in your home to spur your creativity. If you don’t have room for a craft table, you can put together a craft box that is easily accessible whenever you get the urge to create.
  7. Display your artwork. Use the creations from your creative space to showcase your skills and brighten your space. Your art, or your children’s drawings, make for a sentimental and joyful decoration to any space.
  8. Get cleaning. This one is not as much fun as painting or playing music, but a good deep clean can reinvigorate your space and make it more comfortable. If clutter is bringing you down, maybe it’s time to get a jump start on your spring cleaning.

Our houses are our spaces of recreation, work, and rest right now, which can leave homes feeling drained and uninspired. Start with these tips and tricks to easily bring fresh energy into your home in 2021.
