Looking to reduce your energy bill and make your home more sustainable? Depending on how much disposable cash you have on hand, there are big and small changes you can make around your home to reduce your energy consumption, but even small changes can make a big difference. So why not take advantage of the new year to make your home more efficient? Here are our top tips for lowering your energy usage.

  1. Change your behavior. This is one of the easiest ways to lower your energy bill. Practicing good habits like turning off lights when you leave a room, shutting down unused appliances, and turning down your heat and air conditioning are small changes that will have a big impact in the long run. Additional habits, like line drying your clothing, are a little more effort-intensive but it will actually protect the planet and slow the degradation of your clothing.
  2. Adopt energy-efficient technology. With all the energy-saving home innovations on the market, it’s never been easier to make your home more energy-efficient. Switching out dead light bulbs to halogen incandescent bulbs or light-emitting diode bulbs (LEDs) is relatively cheap and these bulbs are estimated to use up to 80 percent less energy and last up to 25 percent longer than traditional bulbs. Appliances are a bit more of an investment, but if you’re already replacing one in your home why not go for an energy efficient model? These might cost you more up front, but in the long run, they can save you up to 25 percent in usage costs.
  3. Conduct home repairs. Poorly insulated walls and windows allow heat to escape in the winter and cool air to get out in the summer, driving up your energy bill. If you have the funds, invest in double pane windows and appropriate insulation and you’ll find yourself turning on the thermostat far less frequently.
  4. Invest in solar. This one is pricier, but not as expensive as you might think. Government subsidies can make installing solar actually very affordable and the money you will save in the long run by generating your own green power is impressive. Many homes cover all their own power needs and more with a set of solar panels.

Energy-saving updates in your home are the gift that keeps on giving. One time investments will continue to save you money and help the planet years down the road.
