The University of Sussex announced the launch of the UK’s first undergraduate degree in climate justice, sustainability, and development. Starting in 2026, this pioneering BA program is designed to prepare students for the growing demand for expertise in climate politics, environmental human rights, and sustainable development.

The decision comes in response to a Future Forum survey revealing that 72 percent of 14- to 18-year-olds want more rigorous climate change education, with a focus on humanities and social sciences. The program aims to bridge that gap by combining academic theory with practical green skills.

A hands-on approach to learning

Will Lock, co-convener of the new course and a lecturer in international development and anthropology, emphasized the program’s focus on real-world applications. “We’re integrating lots of new forms of assessment, new forms of getting students engaged in real-world challenges,” Lock said.

One innovative aspect of the course replaces traditional essays with podcasts, encouraging students to communicate complex environmental justice issues to a broader audience. This hands-on approach also includes practical training in the university’s campus forest food garden, equipping students with skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Answering a call for climate justice education

The introduction of this degree reflects a rising demand for climate justice education that addresses both the environmental and social dimensions of the climate crisis. Lock noted that students are entering classrooms already engaged with the urgency of climate justice. “Now the world is changing around them, and it feels urgent, and they feel like they want to be involved,” he said.

By focusing on climate justice, the program acknowledges the disproportionate impact of climate change on marginalized communities and aims to empower students to advocate for equitable solutions.

Shaping future leaders

As the climate crisis reshapes politics and society, the University of Sussex’s new degree represents a forward-thinking approach to education. By integrating climate politics, activism, and practical skills, the program is set to equip the next generation of leaders with the tools needed to drive meaningful change.

With its focus on both justice and sustainability, the new BA program at Sussex is a promising step toward addressing the complexities of the climate crisis—and ensuring that future leaders are ready to tackle them head-on.
