Every year 4.3 million people die prematurely from illnesses caused by indoor air pollution. One third of the global population burns solid material for heating and cooking—the byproduct of this is toxic smoke inhaled by the home’s inhabitants. GreenChar is an initiative that just launched in Kenya and hopes to reduce deaths caused by indoor air pollution by taking an unprecedented approach. GreenChar makes charcoal briquettes out of agricultural waste; to be used in their more efficient cook stoves that minimize smoke output and maximize efficiency. GreenChar is a native Kenyan company and hopes that their homegrown roots will help sell their healthier cook stoves.
