A study conducted by the Federal Highway Administration found that a little over 99% of all asphalt used is recycled– making it the most recycled material in the US. In addition to the recycling of asphalt, environmentally friendly warm–mix asphalt’s use has grown more than 148% since 2009.
The study also found that less than 1% of the asphalt laid in the US ends up in a landfill. While the solar roadways video went viral a few weeks ago, and could possible provide some efficient energy (though there has been a lot of criticism about the idea) it would replace the most recyclable material with solar panels made of plastic and microprocessors, solving one problem while uncovering another.
