Nearly 40 years ago federal statistics began to track the amount of calories consumed daily by the typical American adult. And it’s now for the first time since that moment, that a “sustained decline” is discernible in those amounts. The New York Times analyzed several data sources on food consumption, and concludes that Americans’ eating habits have begun changing for the better. Not only the calorie consumption has been declining, obesity rates have also started to drop. More than a third of America’s adults are still considered obese, but changes in eating habits are pointing at a change in public attitudes towards food.
