The idea that vegetables can only grow with fresh water is widely held belief that is proving to be wrong. A group of Dutch researchers have successfully grown potatoes using salt water as their water source. The spuds are sweeter and a little saltier than regular potatoes, but supposedly taste pretty normal. While you won’t see Dutch Salties replacing Yukon Golds, or good old Russets anytime soon, the findings could have vast implications for many places currently thought of as being unsuitable for farming. Further studies are currently underway in Pakistan.
