Shoe shopping for yourself may not feel so selfish when you buy from TOMS. The shoe company generously gives a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair the company sells. And now that one-for-one model is hitting the real estate market. In San Diego, California, anyone who buys a condo at a new 41-story development will fund a new home for people living in an impoverished area of Manila, capital city of the Philippines. Each Manila home costs around $5,000 and will be part of a bigger neighborhood with a playground, community garden and other common areas. Some 300 people will be given a home through the initiative. Nat Bosa, who leads the company behind the San Diego condos says, “There’s nothing more powerful than having owners and developers see the physical impact they are having on a global scale. They are affecting lives in the most profound way.”
