“Sleep is the fuel of life”, as Gayle Green, author of the book Insomniac, says. In the book, Green explains how debilitating sleep deprivation can be. Considering millions of people suffer from insomnia, it’s about time we find solutions for it. There are sleeping pills, of course, but with all the known side effects, they can’t possibly be part of the long-term plan. New research points to two new ways of treating the condition: practicing tai chi, or participating in cognitive behavioral therapy. Study participants received two hours a week of cognitive behavioral therapy over four months, or the same amount of tai chi practice. Both treatments turned out to reduce insomnia. The researchers also found out that the treatments reduced inflammation markers in the study participants, which is good news because poor sleep is associated with increased inflammation.
