It is often said that money doesn’t bring happiness. However a new study by the London Business School and the University of Virginia says that’s only partly true. As it happens, the findings show that people in richer countries are happier but only when there’s more equality. That´s the case of countries such as The Netherlands or Sweden, which often score high on both economic and happiness indexes. Rich countries with big income-gaps don’t necessarily have the happiest of people. Researchers suggest that it may have to do with the fact that higher inequality leads to people in the lower economic ranks not ripping the benefits of economic growth while exposed to the growing wealth of others. And that may cause envy.
